Reflections from Bradford with The Place Collective UK

As Bradford prepares to take the spotlight as the UK City of Culture 2025, we had the opportunity to walk its streets, meet its people, and witness first-hand the power of place-based regeneration.

Bradford’s journey is a powerful reminder of how far a city can come when local pride, cultural identity, and inclusive design come together. The energy on the ground is palpable — from ambitious public realm projects to grassroots initiatives revitalising neighbourhoods, Bradford is proving what’s possible when collaboration leads the way.

For us at EGY, place-based learning is central to how we work. We believe that sustainable infrastructure begins with understanding context. Understanding how cities evolve, where challenges remain, and how local knowledge shapes solutions helps us better inform our own work in sustainable infrastructure and placemaking. Bradford’s progress offers a blueprint for how underrepresented cities can harness culture, creativity, and investment to unlock long-term resilience.

As engineers and designers focused on blue/green infrastructure and community-led design, we were especially inspired by the openness of the conversations. Our visit reaffirmed our belief that good placemaking is as much about listening and learning as it is about technical delivery.

Bradford’s next chapter is already being written by those who live and work there — and it’s a privilege to take part in that conversation. We’re grateful to The Place Collective UK for facilitating this opportunity and look forward to applying the insights we’ve gained to help shape more equitable, resilient, and joyful places across the UK.
